🌟 5 Tips For Keeping Your Pet Safe This Christmas Season 🌟
Christmas parties are full of joy, but they can also be overwhelming or risky for our pets.
Here are our Top 5 tips for keeping your pets safe this festive season. 🥳✨🐾
1. 🍫 Keep your dog away from foods such as chocolate, avocados, macadamias, onions, and nuts and raisins. They are toxic for dogs and can cause severe illness. Also avoid overfeeding - especially fatty foods which can cause gastrointestinal upsets or pancreatitis.
2. ✨ Place Christmas lights and electrical cords out of reach of curious kittens and pups. Electrical cords can look like a tasty chew toy to many pets!
3. 🎉 Secure your pet in a safe and quiet area away from fireworks, loud parties and strangers. Thunder jackets or pheromone diffusers such as Feliway or Adaptil may assist with keeping your pet calm around loud noises. You may wish to consider boarding your pet elsewhere overnight. In cases of severe anxiety, please consult with our vets about desensitisation techniques or possibly medications.
4. ⚽ While we’re out partying and visiting friends and relatives, our pets can suffer from separation anxiety and boredom, which can also lead to destructive habits. Make sure that your pets have free access to food, water and shelter while you are gone. Provide them with chew toys and activities to keep them mentally stimulated, and consider a pet-sitting service to check on them and take your dog out for a walk.
5. 🏊 Keep your pets safe around the pool by ensuring that fences are pet-proof. Cover gaps and check regularly for holes or tunnel digging. Keep furniture away from the fence to prevent your dog from jumping over. Remove any tarps or nets if you are going out.
We hope these tips help to keep your furbabies safe and happy this Christmas and New Year! 🎄🎅🐶🐱

🌟 Bottle Tree Vet Staff Christmas Party 🌟
We recently had our team Christmas party with a paint and sip event hosted by Canvas Design Co.! 🍷🖼
Everything was set up and ready to go before we even arrived. The painting was already sketched onto the canvases, and Brooke used a large canvas to demonstrate each step, making it easy for everyone to follow along. 😊
By the end of the night, everyone was absolutely buzzing with excitement, feeling proud of their creations. We all left with a beautiful piece of art that we’re now proudly displaying in our homes! 😍
Thank you to our wonderful team for all your hard work this year. We can’t wait to do it all over again in 2025! 💜💚🧡

🌟 Is Your Pet Prone to Skin Issues? 🌟
Some breeds of cats and dogs are more predisposed to skin problems due to their unique traits. Here are a few examples:
🐶 Dogs:
🐾 Bulldogs & Shar Peis: Wrinkly skin needs extra care to prevent infections.
🐾 Golden Retrievers: Often affected by allergies and dermatitis.
🐾 Dachshunds: Prone to black hair follicular dysplasia.
🐱 Cats:
🐾 Sphynx: Oily buildup on fur-free skin requires regular cleaning.
🐾 Persians: Long fur can mat and hide skin infections.
🐾 Bengals: Sensitive skin makes them more prone to allergies.
🛡️ Prevention is key! Regular grooming, a healthy diet and skin checks can help keep your pet comfortable and happy.

🌟 Anal Glands 🌟
FAQ: Why does my dog scoot along the ground on his bottom? 🤔
Although often attributed to worms, the main cause of scooting is anal glands.
Anal glands are two grape sized scent glands that sit just inside their bottom and they may become blocked, becoming intensely itchy and painful.
If your dog suffers from regularly blocked anal glands:
🐾 Ensure that your dog has enough fibre in their diet. Our vets can advise you on the best premium foods for your pet.
🐾 Book a vet consult to investigate possible allergies and to prevent infection. Anti-inflammatories or antibiotics might be prescribed in these cases.
🐾 Ensure that the anal glands are emptied regularly. We can assist you with this too!

🌟 Pet Safety on Balconies 🌟
Balconies can be a fun place for pets to enjoy fresh air and sunshine, but it's important to make sure they’re safe, too! Here are a few tips to keep your furbabies safe on balconies:
1. Secure the Space: Ensure railings or openings are covered to prevent small pets from slipping through. Pet-proof netting or screens can help make balconies safer.
2. Supervise & Restrict Access: Never leave pets unattended on a balcony. If they get startled or curious, they might try to jump or climb.
3. Mind the Height: Even with barriers, be cautious about how close your pet gets to the edge. Cats and some small dogs can get adventurous!
4. Provide Shade & Hydration: Balconies can get hot! Make sure there's a shaded spot and fresh water available to prevent overheating.
5. Watch for Toxic Plants: Some balcony plants are toxic to pets. Research pet-safe plants and keep harmful ones out of reach.
A little preparation can make the balcony a safe and enjoyable spot for your pet! 🌞🐶🐱

🌟 Animals and Sweat: How Do Cats and Dogs Stay Cool? 🌟
Did you know cats and dogs DO sweat—but only through their paw pads? 🐾
Unlike humans, who rely on sweating to cool down, our pets have evolved other ways to beat the heat. 🌡️
🐕 Dogs: Panting is their go-to cooling method. Rapid breaths help evaporate moisture and regulate their temperature.
🐈 Cats: While they rarely pant, cats use grooming to cool off—licking their fur leaves saliva that evaporates, much like sweat does for us.
Both cats and dogs also instinctively seek shade, rest on cool surfaces and reduce activity to stay comfy.
💡 Pet Heat Tip: Always provide fresh water and a cool spot to rest on warm days. If your pet shows signs of overheating (excessive panting, drooling or lethargy), please contact us immediately. 📞

🌟 Stella 🌟
Stella visited us recently for a dental extraction. 💖
Base narrow canine teeth can be a common dental issue in puppies and may continue into adulthood if left untreated. 🦷
In a healthy mouth, a dog’s lower canine teeth should rest just outside the upper canines, allowing for a comfortable bite. When a dog has “base narrow canines,” the lower canines are too close together and may hit the roof of the mouth.
This can cause pain, damage to the gums, and even infections. If the teeth pierce or rub against the roof of the mouth, they can create painful sores or affect your dog’s ability to eat and play comfortably. 💥
🟢 Treatment Options
Deciduous (Baby) Teeth
🔸 Selective Extraction: In many cases, the best treatment is to extract the deciduous canines. This can create more space for adult teeth to erupt in a better position.
🔸 Specialist Orthodontic Applicances: In some cases, minor adjustments with a special appliance can help guide the adult teeth into a better position as they emerge. This is carried out at a veterinary specialist centre.
Adult (Permanent) Teeth
🔸 Gingivoplasty: In mild cases and where the canine is just catching the opposing gingiva, a small incision can be made to help guide the tooth towards the outside of the mouth.
🔸 Selective Extraction: In cases where orthodontic therapy is not effective or feasible, extraction of one or both lower canine teeth may be the best option.
🔸 Ball Therapy: This is another form of orthodontic treatment where an appropriately sized ball is used to apply forces to the developing canines and guide them into a more correct position, hopefully preventing incorrect alignment and long term trauma and discomfort.
Has your dog had a dental check recently❓ To book, please call and speak to our friendly nurses. 📞

🌟 Not So Pet-Friendly Snail Pellets 🌟
Even in small quantities snail pellets are highly toxic and can be fatal if left untreated. 🐌
Furthermore, snail pellets marked 'pet safe' can still cause severe gastrointestinal signs and red blood cell damage.
Symptoms of snail pellet poisoning include:
🐾 Panting
🐾 Drooling
🐾 Wobbly gait
🐾 Vomiting, Diarrhoea
🐾 Seizures
🐾 Muscles twitches & tremors
☢️ If you suspect that your pet has ingested snail pellets please seek veterinary attention IMMEDIATELY.
When it comes to snail pellets the best prevention is NOT to use them.

🌟 BREED SPOTLIGHT: Tamaskan 🌟
Tamaskan dogs are a breed of dog from Finland that have been selectively bred to resemble a wolf. Similar in size to its cousin the German Shepherd, the Tamaskan has a thick coat and straight, bushy tail.
It comes in three main colours of red-gray, wolf-gray and black-gray. Eyes are yellow through amber and brown, although light eyes are very rare.
The Tamaskan is a good family dog, being gentle with children and accepting of other dogs. His high intelligence makes him an excellent working dog and the Tamaskan has been known to exceed in agility and obedience as well as sled racing.
This pack dog prefers not to be left alone for long periods of time. It is better suited to other human or canine company. Be sure you are this dog's pack leader, providing plenty of daily mental and physical exercise to avoid separation anxiety.
The average life-span of the Tamaskan is 14-15 years.💞

🌟 FAQ: Why does my pet need a blood test before surgery❓🌟
At Bottle Tree Vets we work to the highest standards of care and we strongly believe that performing a pre-anaesthetic blood test for pets who are undergoing a general anaesthetic is meeting that standard.
All pets receive a full physical exam during their surgical stay, but a pre-anaesthetic blood test gives us a much more detailed look into your pet’s health by showing us any underlying disease processes that may be present but not obvious. We are predominantly looking at kidney and liver function as these are the two main organs that process the anaesthetic drugs. Any hidden problems can therefore be detected before surgery. Blood testing also gives us a baseline reading so if there are any future problems with your pet, we have information with which to compare current results.
If you have any questions about pre-anaesthetic blood testing for your pet, please speak to our friendly nurses. 💞

🌟 Fun Fact Friday! 🌟
Did you know❓
Cats can smell through their mouths!
They have a special organ located on the roof of their mouth called the Jacobson’s organ (or vomeronasal organ). When they curl their lips back and open their mouths slightly—known as the Flehman response—they’re drawing scents into this organ for a better sniff!
It's one of the ways cats get a deeper understanding of their surroundings and the scent profiles of their world. 🐱✨

🌟 Different Types of Infections & Rashes in Pets 🌟
Did you know that your pet’s skin can be affected by various types of infections and rashes, each with its own cause and treatment? 🐶🐱 Here’s a quick rundown:
✅ Bacterial Infections: Such as pyoderma, these can cause red bumps and pustules. Antibiotics are usually needed for effective treatment.
✅ Fungal Infections: Ringworm is common in pets and creates circular, hairless lesions. Antifungal meds help clear it up—and it’s contagious, so early treatment is key!
✅ Parasitic Rashes: Fleas and mites can cause intense itching and redness, leading to secondary infections. Quick parasite control is a must!
✅ Allergic Reactions: Allergies to food or pollen can make your pet’s skin red, inflamed and itchy. Finding the trigger helps prevent flare-ups.
💡 If you notice unusual symptoms, please reach out to our vets for a diagnosis. Early treatment keeps your pet comfortable and happy! 🐾 ❤️

🌟 Tips to Minimise Stress for Your Cat’s Vet Visit 🌟
Vet visits can be challenging for cats, with many stressors involved. Here’s a rundown of potential stressors and tips to help keep your cat calm and comfortable on the big day. 🐈
🔵 Potential Stressors
🔸Being kept indoors (especially for outdoor cats)
🔸Withholding food (fasting can be unsettling)
🔸Being picked up and placed in a carrier
🔸Transport in the car
🔸Waiting room with unfamiliar animals and sounds
🔸Examination by the vet
🔵 Tips to Help Your Cat Feel at Ease
🐱 Create Positive Associations with the Carrier
🔸Make the Carrier a Safe Space: Place it in a familiar room and make it cosy with treats, a warm blanket and toys. Cover it with a towel to create a calming, den-like feel.
🔸Use Calming Sprays: Try Feliway (a cat pheromone spray) to help reduce anxiety.
🔸Support When Lifting: Hold the carrier from underneath to avoid shaky movements.
💊 Medication for Extra Calm
🔸Our vets can prescribe medication to help reduce anxiety. It’s best to discuss dosage and timing with our vets in advance.
🚗 Smooth Out Travel Stress
🔸 Cover the Carrier: A light towel over the carrier can help reduce visual stress.
🔸Secure and Ventilate: Make sure the carrier is stable and well-ventilated for comfort during the car ride.
Taking these steps can make vet visits easier on your cat, helping reduce stress for a smoother experience. 🐾
If you have questions about how to make vet visits less stressful for your kitty cat, please speak to one of our friendly nurses about how we can help. ❤️

🌟 New Kitten 🌟
Have you recently welcomed a new kitten into your family? 🐱
Here's what you need to prepare your home so that your little ball of fluff stays healthy and happy! ❤
1. Provide a safe place for your kitten to retreat to. Position the litter tray in a quiet corner and prevent other cats from coming in. It is best to remove poisonous plants and substances and make sure there are no small items such as needles and thread left lying around etc.
2. Good quality premium kitten food for optimum nutrition. Cats prefer to drink well away from where they eat, and eat and drink far away from where they go to the toilet, so keep these resources separated where possible.
3. A cosy bed in a secluded area or positioned up high where they feel safe.
4. A kitten pen to keep your furbaby out of mischief and to introduce them to other pets.
5. A secure cat carrier for visits to the vet.
6. Toys are a great way to interact with your kitten and give them an outlet for energy and instincts.
7. Identification. We recommend that all cats are microchipped but you may also want your kitten to wear a collar for visible identification.
8. A scratch post will give your kitten a place to sharpen their claws and mark their territory without damaging the furniture.
9. A cat flap to provide free access to an enclosed outdoor area or 'catio'.

Snake Bite Prevention 🐍❗️
During the warmer days of Spring snakes become more active as they leave their winter retreats in search of a mate and food.
🐍 If you are walking your dog in bushland or grassy areas, take care to walk in cleared areas only such as bush trails and pathways.
🐍 Keep your dog on a lead
🐍 Wear long trousers and enclosed footwear
🐍 Keep a lookout on the ground ahead of you where snakes may be sunning themselves.
🐍 Hungry snakes will be attracted to sheds and outbuildings where mice and rats breed in rubbish and under building materials such as corrugated iron sheets. Keep these areas free from debris and ensure that your pets do not have access.
If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, or if you find your dog with a dead snake, you should get your pet into the car immediately and head straight to our vet clinic or your nearest emergency vet hospital. It's vital that we admit your dog for observation, as signs can take time and can result in sudden collapse and death. Call us once you are underway, and we will have everything ready to help your pet. ☎️

🌟 Client Testimonial 🌟
"I have been with Bottle Tree Vets since my puppy had an accident and fractured her paw. Dr Lauren so graciously got her in at the last minute, end of day emergency appointment as a new patient, and her and her beautiful team have looked after us ever since. Dr Kathryn has been absolutely phenomenal and picked up a major issue that needed a specialist surgery to correct it. The ongoing care has been second to none and I'm so thankful for this beautiful team. Keep up the great work ladies, you are all very much appreciated and loved in our household. 🐕🩷"

Tips for a PET SAFE Halloween: 👻
🎃 Be careful your pups don't sneak out when you open the door to trick or treaters.
🎃 No chocolate for dogs or cats.
🎃 Dressing up is fun for humans, but may not be fun for our pets. Avoid any costumes that use rubber bands or anything that might constrict circulation or breathing. Likewise, avoid costumes with toxic paints, dyes, or that are edible.
🎃 Constant visitors to the door along with spooky sights and sounds may cause pets to escape and become injured in a variety of ways. Consider letting your dog spend Halloween inside with special treats, safe and secure. Even in a fenced yard, Halloween is not a good night for a dog to be outside.
🎃 This is doubly true for cats: they may try to bolt out the door and even if they are allowed outside, they are more at risk for being hit by cars due to the high traffic from trick or treaters. Consider keeping your cats in an interior room where they are unable to bolt out the door.
We hope you have a super spooky paw-some celebration! 👻🎃

🌟 Tricks, not Treats 🌟
Halloween is fun time for visiting friends and neighbours, and picking up some sweet goodies along the way. 🎃🍭 However foods containing chocolate or xylitol can be dangerous and even potentially fatal for our pets. ⚠️
Chocolate 🍫
Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats and can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Theobromine is the predominant toxin in chocolate and is very similar to caffeine. Dogs and cats cannot metabolise theobromine and caffeine as well as people can, and this makes them more sensitive to the chemicals’ effects.
Xylitol 🍬
Xylitol is a sweetener that is most commonly found in food products but can be found in other consumer goods such as medications, sunscreen, makeup and toothpaste. Consumption can be dangerous for your dog, causing low blood sugar and liver injury.
❗️Signs of chocolate ingestion include:
🔹Vomiting
🔹Diarrhoea
🔹Rapid heartbeat
🔹Hyperactivity
🔹Tremors
🔹Seizures
🔹Death in severe cases
If you suspect that your pet has ingested chocolate or xylitol please call us immediately. ☎

🌟 Why is flea and tick prevention important? 🤔🌟
Fleas and ticks can cause two specific problems.
1. They can cause discomfort and skin irritation through their bites, and in some cases can cause severe allergic reactions. Paralysis tick bites can be fatal!
2. They both can carry diseases and can cause illness both in pets and people. Some of these diseases can be deadly and others can cause severe, chronic and lifelong illness.
There are several different methods available for treating and preventing parasites, including:
🐾 annual injection (for dogs)
🐾 spot-ons
🐾 shampoos and sprays
🐾 tablets & chews
🐾 combing
Choosing the best treatment for your pet will depend on your pet's medical history, activities (such as swimming) and the duration of the product.
If you're unsure about which products to use for your pet, pop in and speak to one of our friendly vet nurses or give us a call. ❤️

🌟 Pet Safety - Corn Cobs ⚠️🌟
Did you know ❓
Corn cobs are one of the leading causes for fatal bowel obstructions in dogs. ❗️🌽
Although the corn itself is safe to eat once it has been removed, the cob can cause major intestinal blockages that need to be removed via surgery.
Please make sure that these tasty treats are stored and disposed of well away from your pets. 🐾

🌟 Non-Food Enrichment Ideas for Dogs 🌟
It's often easy to use treats as rewards and for mental stimulation, however too much of a good thing can often lead to weight gain and related health problems. 🐶🐾
Here are some non-food enrichment ideas to get you started: 👇
1️⃣ Let your dog smell every package or bag that comes into the house, including groceries.
2️⃣ Trick training (yes, it involves treats, but the dogs find the training rewarding as well as the treats. You can also substitute treats with a favourite toy or a pat.)
3️⃣ Playing hide and seek in the house. Jump up and yell "you found me" - they LOVE it!
4️⃣ Dance parties. They love it when their humans act all silly.
5️⃣ Bed wrestling - so much fun. Some dogs love being under the covers and being grabbed at outside the covers. Others like to pounce on hands that are under the covers.
6️⃣ Recycling. They love pre-shredding the recycling, sniffing the containers and in general making a mess. Always supervise - dogs have suffocated in chip bags, and getting your head stuck in a cereal box is NOT FUN.
7️⃣ Let them unwrap a new toy. When a box comes, remove the tape and plastic wrapping, and let them unpack the order. They love the paper and cardboard.
8️⃣ Sitting in the window and watching the world go by. This is especially fun when the window is open to allow the smells to come in from outside.
So much can be done that does not include treats. If your dog enjoys it - it's enrichment! 😃
We would love to know how you keep your dog busy and mentally stimulated, so please share your ideas in the comments! 💞

🌟 Ear Mites 🌟
Ear mites are a fairly common parasite in both cats and dogs. They look like tiny white dots, but can barely be seen with the naked eye. They live on the skin of the ear canal and feed off ear wax and skin oils. 🕷
Signs your pet may have ear mites:
🐱 shaking their head or scratching their ears excessively.
🐱 having red and inflamed ears caused by extra wax and irritation.
🐱 producing a black, dry ear discharge (similar to coffee grounds) which can sometimes give off a bad smell.
Thankfully they are easily treated. Give our friendly nurses a call to find out which options are best for your pet. 📞

🌟 Feline Urinary Health - When To See a Vet 🌟
Urinary problems in cats are common and can be serious, especially in male cats with FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and female cats with cystitis. 😿
These conditions can lead to pain, discomfort, complications and blockages which can be fatal. 🚨
⚠️ Signs to watch for:
🔸 Straining to urinate or producing little/no urine
🔸 Frequent trips to the litter box
🔸 Blood in the urine
🔸 Painful or vocal urination
🔸 Licking around the urinary opening
🔸 Changes in behaviour or signs of distress
If your cat shows any of these symptoms, early intervention is key! Please contact us immediately to book an urgent consultation with our vets. 📞

🌟 Diabetes in Pets 🌟
Diabetes in pets (Diabetes Mellitus) is a condition that occurs when animals don't produce enough insulin or develop a resistance to it.
Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that allows the use of glucose for energy. If your pet’s body doesn't respond to it as it should, it can cause a build-up of toxins in their blood and can lead to other health concerns over time.
🔵 Signs of Diabetes in Pets:
🐾 Increased thirst and urination
🐾 Changes in appetite
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Sweet, 'acetone' breath
🐾 Cataracts in the eyes
While there is no guarantee that your pets won't have diabetes in their lifetime, you can help improve their overall health. A well-balanced diet with regular exercise is key! Consult with our vets if you require further advice. We're here to help. 💞

Bee Stings 🐝🐝🐝
Spring is here and the flowers are blooming! We all enjoy the explosion of colour at this time of the year, however with blossoms come bees, and subsequently the risk of your four-legged friend being stung. 🌸🌼
Walking your dog in the cooler hours when bees are less active will help to reduce the risks, however what should you do if your dog is stung by a bee?
🐾 Keep our number in your phone and call ahead to let us know you are on the way. You should also keep your local after hours emergency vet number handy.
🐾 If your dog has a known anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting or a pattern of escalating reaction to bee stings then we recommend keeping an Epi-pen on hand. Our vets can teach you how to administer the injection in an emergency.
First Aid 🧰
Reactions can range from mild to severe, ranging from a small, localised area of redness, to swelling around the face and throat and trouble breathing.
🐾 Remove the sting if it is easy to find.
🐾 Apply a cold compress or face washer to the affected area.
🐾 Keep your dog quiet if possible to prevent the spread of toxins around the body while you are on the way to the vet.
Questions ❓
If you are concerned about your dog's risks and reactions to bee stings, call us for a chat.
In the meantime, we hope these tips will help you and your dog to enjoy the warmer weather and the great outdoors safely in spring-time. 🌺🌻🌞

🌟 Signs of Flea Allergy Dermatitis 🌟
Fleas like warm, humid weather so they will be prolifically reproducing during the spring and summer months. ☀️
Flea bites expose pets to flea saliva – which some pets become allergic to over time. This allergic reaction is known as flea allergy dermatitis, or FAD.
Bites from just one flea can be enough to trigger intense itching in a pet with FAD, and our vets may diagnose FAD even if fleas or flea dirt (flea faeces) aren’t visible.
🔵 Signs of FAD include:
🔸Intense itching – Your pet may scratch, bite or lick excessively.
🔸Red, inflamed skin – Especially around the tail base, hind legs, belly and flanks.
🔸Hair loss – Patches of hair may fall out due to frequent scratching or biting.
🔸Scabs or crusts – You may notice scabs, especially in areas like the neck, back and tail.
🔸Hot spots – Moist, inflamed areas can form due to constant irritation.
🔸Small bumps or rash – These may appear on the skin, particularly in affected areas.
It's important to treat both the fleas and the allergic reaction to prevent discomfort and complications. If your pet shows these signs, please give us a call. ☎️
Our vets will look for evidence of fleas and may perform a flea elimination trial, skin tests or blood tests.

Cat Fights 🐈💥
Cats can breed all year round, but there’s a definite increase in activity in the Springtime when male cats may be roaming and looking for mates.
Even if your cat is sterilised there can still be fights and encounters over territories when cats are on the prowl.
Cat fights can cause infected wounds and abscesses that leave small punctures and trap bacteria from the cat's mouth under the skin of the victim. As the bacteria multiply, tissues surrounding the bite wounds become infected and can cause pain and swelling.
Please try to keep kitties indoors as much as possible and ensure that they are up to date with their vaccinations. Desexing your cat will also help to prevent roaming and fighting. ❤

Spring Parasite Prevention ☀️🌻
Fleas, ticks, intestinal worms and heartworm can affect our pets all year round, however they do thrive in warmer weather. 🦟
Dogs and cats can become infected with parasites from the environment, from insect bites and by licking themselves or other pets.
There are several different methods available for treating and preventing parasites, including:
🐾 🌟 NEW 🌟 annual injection (for dogs)

FAQ: How often should I bathe my dog? 🛁🐶
Most healthy dogs will benefit from a fortnightly bath however this will depend on fur type, if your dog has skin allergies and whether or not they are an indoor or an outdoor dog. Some of our more active canine friends can't resist a splash in the mud or doing zoomies in the paddock, so sometimes an extra bath is necessary!
Some dogs' coats are oiler than others, requiring more frequent washing. Other breeds such as the Alaskan Malamute have very thick coats that benefit more from regular grooming. If you're unsure, your nose will tell you when they are starting to get smelly!
Washing your dog with the wrong shampoo can cause problems for dogs with allergies and itchy skin. If you would like some advice on bathing your dog our friendly nurses are here to help. ❤️

Grass Seeds 🌾
Grass seeds are a common cause of admissions to hospital in Springtime. They fall off long grass and embed themselves in a dog’s paws, ears, armpits, tail, or skin, sometimes causing painful wounds and infections. It's important to remove them as quickly as possible as they can embed themselves under the skin and migrate through your pet's body. 🤕
Signs that your dog may have picked up a grass seed include:
🐾 head shaking
🐾 paw licking
🐾 swelling
🐾 redness
🐾 oozing or
🐾 sneezing if the grass seed has lodged in the nose.
If the grass seed is close to the surface of the skin our vets may be able to remove it with a special pair of tweezers, however if it has become embedded deeply beneath the skin or lodged in eyes, ears or mouth, surgical removal may be required.
The best thing to do is keep your dog away from long grass in the warmer months and check their fur and paws thoroughly after a walk. You should also ensure that your dog is kept well groomed, particularly around the ears and feet. 🐾

Your Say 📢
The Australian government is considering measures to address the ecological damage and threats to native wildlife caused by feral cats and household pets. 🐈
They are exploring policies such as night-time curfews, limits on the number of cats per household, and the introduction of cat-free suburbs.
The ACT has introduced similar rules in certain suburbs, requiring all cats born after July 2022 to remain on their owners’ property at all times.
Other states, including Western Australia and New South Wales, are in the process of developing their own regulations, with some councils in Perth considering 24-hour curfews. ⏰
What are your thoughts? Do you think that pet cats should be curfewed, and if so, should it be for 24hrs or just at night❓
